Taylor Swift may be singlehandedly saving the global economy.
Her Eras tour, celebrating all of her different album “eras,” brings a whirlwind of economic activity wherever it goes. According to CBS News, Taylor Swift could generate a whopping $5 billion of economic activity worldwide thanks to her dedicated fans, the Swifties.
In June 2023, The Federal Reserve of Philadelphia noted that May 2023 was the “strongest month for hotel revenue in Philadelphia” since the pandemic, due to all of the Swifties visiting. The Taylor Swift effect wasn’t unique to Philadelphia. “Taylor Swift is a force to be reckoned with,” wrote Julie Calvert of Cincinnati’s VisitCincy.com. “The economic impact Swift creates is staggering, as fans travel from far and wide to attend her concerts, filling hotels, restaurants, and local attractions.”

The reason she generates so much economic activity is that it’s a lot of work to attend an Eras concert. The amount of detail involved in attending an Eras concert is mind-boggling. Swifties create elaborate outfits to celebrate a specific “era” of Taylor Swift’s musical career, or even pay homage to a specific song lyric. Hours are spent fixing hair and makeup, and even making outfits by hand. An entire sub-economy related to Taylor Swift exists due to the intense level of Taylor Swift fandom that exists in the world.
One thing about being a Taylor Swift fan is that the DIY element of being a Swiftie is huge. Swifties have a tradition at Eras concerts where they make friendship bracelets beforehand and trade them with other Swifties at the concert. Of course, this concept is not limited to concerts. The other day, I was out running errands, when I struck up a conversation with someone. I noticed she had a Taylor Swift bracelet that said “Fearless.” Excited that I had found a fellow Swiftie, I reached into my purse and presented her with another “Fearless” bracelet I had made, as well as two other bracelets, all made by me.

How to Make Taylor Swift “Eras” Bracelets
Taylor Swift “Eras” bracelets are as unique as the people who make them. They spell out different song names, themes, and lyrics from various Taylor Swift songs. For songs that have lengthy names, one can abbreviate them on the bracelets, so that “You Need to Calm Down” becomes “YNTCD.” These acronyms can range from pretty recognizable to downright esoteric. I set out to make bracelets from every Era so that I could have a whole, beautiful stack of Taylor Swift DIY bracelets as arm candy. Before you ask, yes, I hope to pass them out to random people I meet that are also Taylor Swift fans. Taylor Swift is universal!
To make the bracelets, you’ll need: colorful beads, alphabet beads, bracelet elastic string, and scissors. Luckily, you can find all of the supplies on Amazon! They have a variety of different beads, moreso than beads you might find at your local craft store.

Colorful Beads
You’ll need two kinds of beads: colorful beads (of most any type) and letter beads. For the colorful beads, I recommend pony beads, but any beads that you can easily thread onto elastic bracelet thread would work. You can pick some up at your local craft store, or use my recommendations from Amazon.com below. Both of my recommendations below come in their own handy storage case!

Alphabet Letter Beads
There are a variety of cute alphabet letter beads out there. You can get alphabet beads on Amazon.com. I’ve listed some of my favorite bead designs below from Amazon. Most of them arrive in their own case so that there are no messes to be made!

Bracelet String
You will need a stretchy cord string to string your beads onto. Look for elastic string so that they can easily fit the shape of your wrist. You can get elastic bracelet string from Amazon.com also.
Transparent plastic stretchy cord
I used transparent elastic cord for my bracelets. Because it’s clear, it won’t show through transparent beads, and it blends in with any combination of beads. The only downside is that the plastic cord is a bit tricky to tie in a knot when you’re done making the bracelet. You will have to tie it multiple times to make sure it is secure.

Elastic cord
Elastic cord is a good choice for Taylor Swift friendship bracelets. It’s easier to tie into a knot than transparent string, which means that your bracelet will last longer without coming apart.

Scissors
The only other thing you will need to make Taylor Swift friendship bracelets is a pair of scissors to cut the elastic into wrist-size lengths. Remember to leave a bit extra space when cutting the elastic to be able to easily add beads to the bracelet and to leave room for tying the bracelet up at the end. I like these scissors from Fiskars on Amazon.com.
Taylor Swift background music
The last thing you need to make Taylor Swift bracelets is some good background music. I made Taylor Swift bracelets the other day watching get ready with me (GRWM) videos of people going to the Eras tour, such as this one.
